These platforms’ owner, Meta, acknowledged the problem and stated that they were attempting to resolve it. They then clarified that there was a technical issue, although they did not specify what the issue was.
Everything had returned to normal by lunchtime, and Meta expressed her regret for any trouble the interruption may have caused.
The news of Facebook and Instagram going down quickly went viral on Twitter. Twitter’s trending section was inundated with over 186,000 tweets about the outage; some users even questioned whether their accounts had been compromised, although that was most likely untrue. The fact that “hacked” also became a popular hashtag indicated how confused many were.
